The Institute of Human Genetics at the Medical University of Innsbruck

This motto is also written on a stone plaque in the entrance area of the University of Innsbruck (photo). Why this call is especially important for genetic diagnostics is explained here..
The central task of human genetics is to understand and explain how genetic information influences human health and disease, and to help us draw the right conclusions for ourselves. This has different aspects:
In the context of basic research, we are trying to understand precisely the connection between genetic information and the normal function of the human body or the development of diseases.
- In the genetic outpatient clinic, during consults and by means of often complex laboratory analyses, we clarify whether and how diseases and complaints can be attributed to genetic factors in individual cases or which disease risks could exist.
- Medical genetic counselling helps those seeking advice to understand the relevant information and to draw the consequences that are right for oneself. This also includes support in the coordination of specific therapies and in the clinical management of rare genetic diseases.
- As part of our teaching, we communicate this to future doctors, researchers, people in other biomedical professions and the general public.
